Truckee Free Summer Music Series
Truckee Free Summer Music Series
Every summer Truckee-Donner Recreation & Park Districtpresents a free SUMMER MUSIC SERIES every Wednesday at “Salty” Gebhardt Amphitheather at the Truckee River Regional Park. This is a fun event for the whole family. The concert starts at 6:30pm and ends around 8:00 pm. My family likes to pack a picnic basket and gets there around 6pm with some low back chairs and some throws in case the weather gets chilly later on. We usually see a lot of friends and have a chance to catch up with each other for a while.
Each week TRUCKEE SUMMER MUSIC SERIES features a different band with diverse music styles such as country, latin, rock’n roll, blues…These bands are sponsored by local businesses and they give an outstanding performance year after year. Near the front of the stage is a clearing that allow people to get up and dance. Quite often, you will find a large crowd moving to the lively music.

Amgen tour cancelled at Lake Tahoe Truckee
Amgen tour cancelled at Lake Tahoe Truckee
I have been so excited waiting for Stage 1 & Stage 2 of Amgen Tour to go through Lake Tahoe Truckee. This is one of the largest bike race in America and Tahoe Truckee had planned all kinds of events to welcome the racers such as “King of the Mousehole” sponsored by Truckee Donner Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Town of Truckee.
Our Truckee Outrigger Canoe club also arranged to paddle along the shore on the morning of Monday May 16, next to the world best riders.
However nature did not want to cooperate and winter storms arrive on Sunday May 15 with a vengeance. Between the snow and wind, race officials decided that conditions were just too dangerous and cancelled both Stage 1 & 2 in Tahoe Truckee. Monday Stage 2 of Amgen Tour was moved to Nevada City at 12:30 pm.
I guess Truckee will remain our best kept secret until the next big event. Let hope Spring will arrive soon since there are a lot of fun summer outdoor activities in Lake Tahoe Truckee: scenic trails for hiking, biking…not to mention the beautiful lakes for fishing, boating, etc….
Come on Spring…we are ready!!!

Full moon paddle at Prosser Lake in Truckee, CA
Full moon paddle at Prosser Lake in Truckee, CA
Our friend Corky emailed us a couple weeks ago to propose a full moon paddle at Prosser Lake. She & her husband Don brought beer, salad & some delicious steaks to grill. Our other friends & neighbors, Dennis & Lisa, brought tequilla, a portable BBQ and rented a tandem kayak. Since my husband Jude had made two beautiful wooden kayaks…we were set to go. I packed some aged cheddar cheese & crackers, marinated shrimp & beers in the cooler while Jude took care of loading the two kayaks onto his homemade wooden rack in the back of his pick up truck. Driving to the beach where we launched the kayaks was an adventure in itself. The road is unpaved, bumpy & twisty…a couple of times we thought that we might lose the kayaks when we hit a pothole or some big rocks.
Upon arrival at our destination, the beautiful setting just took our breaths away. The weather was warm & pleasant. The lake was calm and nobody in sight but the six of us. We set up our folding chairs & table upon which a sumptuous feast started to take place. We started out with shots of tequilla complete with lime & salt, munched on cheese & crackers, shrimp marinated in cilantro & lime while watching the sun slowly set. Then suddenly a little white ball peeked over the mountain range & cast its magic spell over us. We captured the moment with our camera phones…
Beautiful moon rising over the mountain range.
Dennis holding the moon in the palm of his hand.
Then we got into our kayak & paddled under the light of the full moon…enjoying the shimmering light on the water. It reminded me of the yellow brick road in “The Wizard of Oz” so we headed along our very own shimmering yellow brick road. The lake was completely still except for the sounds of our laughter & paddles dipping in the water.
This full moon paddle is truly memorable & we vowed that there will be a next time in the near future.
